Amanda's Eyes by Kathy Disanto

Description:

Waking up is the pits when you come to in a hospital with a broken arm, a colorful assortment of abrasions and contusions, and a face swathed in bandages. It’s even worse if you can’t remember what hit you.

The bad and the ugly are crime reporter Amanda “A.J.” Gregson’s business. But learning she had a ringside seat for an explosion that killed two agents of the Continental Intelligence and Investigative Service (CIIS), incinerated an entire block of warehouses, and did so much damage to her eyes they had to be surgically removed? Well, that gives the darker side of life a whole new meaning.

Haunted by elusive nightmares, A.J. waits for her transplant and struggles to remember the events leading up to the fateful night of September 4, 2075. Weeks crawl by without a glimmer, before memory floods back the night before surgery, every brutal detail crystal clear.

The explosion had been the work of the Ferrymen.

"The Ferrymen. My not-so-magnificent obsession for more than a year. Only a cataclysm could have made me forget. I guess you could call them hitmen. You could also call Einstein a math whiz. Think ruthless. Think unstoppable. Think killers so proficient 'caught the ferry' was fast replacing 'bought the farm' in common usage, and you have the Ferrymen in a nutshell."

The transplant surgery goes off without a hitch—welcome news, because A.J. is raring for a rematch with Hell's Boatmen. But contrary to popular belief, what you see isn't always what you get. Take her new eyes, for example. Those baby blues may look perfectly normal, but they possess a power that turns her world upside down—the power to see into the hidden dimensions of the human heart.

When the Sight unmasks the mastermind behind the Ferrymen, the unveiling is as stunning as it is unbelievable. The revelation sets her on course for a second head-collision with evil. Will she survive the final encounter?

The Summoning (Darkest Powers #1) by Kelley Armstrong

Description:

My name is Chloe Saunders and my life will never be the same again.

All I wanted was to make friends, meet boys, and keep on being ordinary. I don't even know what that means anymore. It all started on the day that I saw my first ghost - and the ghost saw me.

Now there are ghosts everywhere and they won't leave me alone. To top it all off, I somehow got myself locked up in Lyle House, a "special home" for troubled teens. Yet the home isn't what it seems. Don't tell anyone, but I think there might be more to my housemates than meets the eye. The question is, whose side are they on? it's up to me to figure out the dangerous secrets behind Lyle House...before its skeletons come back to haunt me.

My Thoughts:

Creepy yet amazing! For 13+ readers but I definitely wouldn't recommend this book to anyone under the age of 13 that is terrified of ghosts and things that go bump in the night. Though it's not a scary book, it did give me chills. Overall the book was amazing, well written, and thoroughly edited.

Chloe Saunders finds herself in a group home for troubled teens. Everything seems to be normal but really...things are what they seem. Who are the other kids that are in the home, and why are they in there? And the ghost in the basement will not leave her alone until she discovers all those dark hidden secrets.

Fade to Black by Morgan Kearns

Description from Goodreads:

Fade to Black is the debut novel by award-winning short fiction writer and journalist Morgan Kearns. It is a tempestuous and witty love story, complete with dangerous twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the very last page.

Kate Callahan is a news reporter in Salt Lake City whose life seems to be perfect. Her attentive boyfriend, Jesse Vasquez, is determined to prove his love for her. But the day she steps through the doors of KHB as their newest reporter and meets photographer Rich Spencer, everything changes. There is something about the way he caresses her with his eyes, speaks to her without saying a word, and lights her skin aflame with a simple touch that makes her rethink everything she’s ever known.

Ultimately, she is faced with an impossible choice—one that tears her heart in two—which becomes excruciating when fate steps in and decides for her. Walking along a mountain of heartache and regret, Kate struggles to find a world where love does conquer all.

My Thoughts:

This is the first book I've read by Morgan Kearns. I wasn't sure how I was going to like it but I ended up thoroughly impressed. I felt like I was right there in the story experiencing everything. And the emotions, just...WOW! Tissues are a must when reading Fade to Black!

Kate has a great boyfriend and a wonderful new job as a news reporter. Rich is a miserable man in a horrible marriage. When the two are paired together on assignments, something happens. Rich finds a reason to smile again and Kate gets butterflies when Rich looks at her.

What a wonderful story about real life. Sometimes life just isn't fair but when you listen to your heart you open the door to many great and wonderful things.

My Thoughts:

E.L. James did an amazing job! The story, as well as the first two, is well written. This book had the perfect ending for Christian and Ana, in my opinion. I enjoyed their story very much. I would have like to see more in the ending of the book though.

Damon (The Protectors series #1) by Teresa Gabelman

Description from Goodreads:

Damon DeMasters is a vampire warrior who has taken an oath to protect his own kind as well as humans. As a social worker, Nicole Callahan fights for the right of every child placed in her care. Damon has been ordered to train Nicole and her colleagues against the dangers they now face. Even as sparks fly, Nicole and Damon depend on each other to protect the children of both races.

My Thoughts:

Nicole has a love for children and takes her job as a social worker very seriously. Having been through the system herself, she can relate to these kids in a way that no one else can. But her job becomes extremely dangerous when she makes a point to protect the vampire children against those that want them to make money from the sales of their vampire blood, which is also known as Crimson Rush.

Damon, a Vampire Warrior, has been sent to help train Nicole and the other social workers self defense to prepare for the dangers associated with Crimson Rush. He swore that he would never mate with a human but Nicole has his heart yearning for something more than he is willing to offer.

This book was extremely entertaining. I found myself sitting up until three in the morning just to finish it. Whether or not Teresa Gabelman has read the Twilight saga, I have no idea, but there were a couple of things that reminded me of it. Overall, this is a great book and a quick, fun read.

Amos was creepy at first but totally turned into a kid I love like my own...not often I say that about a character in a book. Nix & Mads are...hum...how to word them...AWESOME. This book was good. I love romance and Slow Hands definitely held my attention and had me on the edge of my seat.

Maddy goes to a charity auction to bid on the man her stepmother is after. What she didn't expect to find was love.

Reverb by J. Cafesin

Description from Goodreads:

James Michael Whren is brilliant, beautiful, wealthy, and taken-with himself, or more precisely, his genius for creating music. The object of desire for many, James's greatest passion is for his muse. But on the evening after his brother's funeral, his father turns his life upside down, and James is left abandoned in hell with no one to save him. James finally escapes, and on his run for freedom he's forced to confront the man he was as he seeks asylum from old friends and ex-lovers. Humbled and almost defeated, he finds refuge on a small Greek island. But with solitude comes madness. Then James meets Elisabeth. Reverb is a story of redemption, and follows one man's extraordinary journey of emotional growth through his discovery of his capacity to love.

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed this novel! It is one that I will read again. The main character is a musician who has been locked up for drug use. He has ran away and is living under an alias. I love the way this author develops this character. I felt myself being drawn to him and wanting to help him. Definitely a book to add to your reading list.

Indivisible by Jessica McQuinn

Description from Goodreads:

Charlie and Gideon Cooper's story begins where most romance stories end: at the happily ever after. Gideon's protective nature makes Charlie feel safe and happy in her new life as the wife of a Navy SEAL—until her happily comes crashing down around her. And though she’s surrounded by loving family and friends, instead of pulling together in the wake of Charlie’s ordeal, their secrets and wrong perceptions threaten to break them all apart. The experience will test the bond they share and determine whether Charlie and Gideon are truly Indivisible.

Jessica McQuinn skillfully pulls readers into the conflicting emotions of an entire family—the traumatized wife, the far-away husband, the inadequate younger brother, the over-nurturing mother. McQuinn lets readers see their strengths and their vulnerabilities—everything that makes them human. And all the while, she deftly weaves in entertaining interactions so readers get to know and adore the characters’ lighter sides, even as the story ventures into dark territory. Indivisible is an unforgettable story of the power of love and the importance of trust.

My Thoughts:

This story is different than most romances in the fact that it is not about a couple meeting and falling in love but rather a married couple struggling to remain together.

Gideon, Navel SEAL, and Charlie Cooper have been happily married for a year. On their one year anniversary Gideon is given the news that he is to leave in just a few short days for a six month deployment. Then their happily ever after seems to crack and fall to pieces.

Charlie tries to busy herself to keep her mind off the fact that her husband is out of reach being shot at for his country. She didn't think that this situation could get any worse until a traumatic event finds its way to her doorstep. And if the traumatic event wasn't enough to throw her into depression, her wonderful brother-in-law misreads the situation and tells Gideon that his wife is having an affair while he is in service.

But through all of these events we are able to see just how strong this couple really is.

Breathless by Scott Prussing

Description from Goodreads:

College freshman Leesa Nyland has been fascinated by vampires since she was three years old. That’s when her mom started acting weird, refusing to go outside during the day and insisting the sunlight hurt her skin because she had been bitten by a one-fanged vampire…

But fascinated doesn’t mean Leesa believes—any more than she believes in blue fire, people who live for centuries, and kisses that can kill. When her beloved older brother suddenly disappears, she is forced to confront all these and more.

My Thoughts:

I got this book from Amazon when it was listed for free. I wasn't sure what to expect, I mean who ever heard of a one-fanged vampire? And people who live for centuries that have blue fire and whose kisses can kill? That is what drew my attention, I had to know more about these deadly kisses.

Surely vampires are just fiction, just the imagination of some writer, but what do you do when your whole life has been turned upside down because your mom believes that she was bitten by a one-fanged vampire and claims that the sun hurts her skin?
Leesa goes to college to learn more about vampires, especially these one-fanged ones that have ruined her childhood. She is also in search on her brother who disappeared while away at this same college.

This is a book that I plan on sharing with my children.
